Studies
The project’s “Mother Language over the History” main purpose is to facilitate the rediscovery of a Mediterranean identity among the partner countries, with a view to making the local communities, both Italian and Greek, more aware of the cultural heritage of their regions and of the value of this heritage in terms of the opportunities it provides for local development. An element of dialogue and comparison between the two cultures involved is the story of women, seen as a key factor in bringing about cultural change in the regional level.
The research in this regard was conducted mainly by young researchers from the University of the Salento, the Patras Science Park and the Technological Educational Institution of Epirus. The resulting historical and social reconstruction of the role of women in the society of western Greece and the Salento highlights the key moments in which women played a crucial role by participating, directly or indirectly, in the social, economic and cultural evolutions.
In this reconstruction, Woman becomes a key to interpreting the territory and identifying a common cultural heritage on both sides of the Adriatic. The three institutions followed a common approach to the research, studying the influence and the contribution of women in three main fields: culture, society and economy. The study methods adopted included not only research on the bibliographical sources but direct interviews and extensive photographic evidence, as well as, when necessary because of the lack or the rarity of written sources. Focusing on the common themes and contexts of study, the researchers on both sides of the Adriatic produced the studies presented in this page.
